Patriots Lose Season Finale (5/29/2007) - Wells High School 8 at Patriots 2

The Patriots lost their final game of the 2007 season to Wells High School, 8 to 2, at Gray.

Gray-New Gloucester made a game out of it in the third inning when Josh Dumaine scored on a wild pitch and Lucas Chase delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that scored a tagging Joe Billings from third, knotting the score at twos.

In the sixth inning, Wells recaptured the lead by hitting seven straight singles, accounting for five runs. They added another run in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach.

Pitcher Peter Clement started the game for the Patriots following his very solid outing at Greely, but removed himself after the second inning. Billings and Chase completed the pitching line for the Patriots.

Sophomore Owen Chaplin was also a repeat hitter for the Patriots, hitting a single in the second inning and a double in the fourth.

A milestone occurred in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Patriots when Derek Down came off the bench to pinch hit. After having worked the count full, Down proceeded to hit a sharp ground ball up-the-middle, earning the first hit of his varsity baseball career.

Gray-New Gloucester's lone seniors, Matt Moberg and Clement, finished their high school playing career (probably just as it started) by collecting two hits a piece. The coaching staff would like to thank and congratulate them for all that they have contributed to the baseball program, on and off the field. Best wishes to the both of them.
